Wood icon, "Saint Anastasia the Roman", miniature, 7x10cm

Hand painted wood icon representing Saint Anastasia the Roman. Miniature measuring 7x10 cm. Original artwork.
The Martyr Anastasia the Roman, born in Rome and orphaned at the age of three, was raised in a monastery under the guidance of the pious Abbess Sophia. Known for her asceticism and beauty, Anastasia became renowned among Christians for her faith and among pagans for her appearance. During Emperor Decius’s persecution of Christians, the pagan governor Probus summoned her, seeking to persuade her to renounce her faith through flattery and threats.
Anastasia steadfastly professed her devotion to Christ, declaring her readiness to suffer and die for her Lord. Despite enduring brutal tortures, including beatings, mutilation, and humiliation, she remained resolute, glorifying God throughout her ordeal. Her unwavering faith inspired others, including a Christian named Cyril, who was martyred for aiding her.
Eventually, Anastasia was beheaded outside the city. Her body, discarded to be desecrated by wild animals, was protected by divine intervention. Guided by an angel, Abbess Sophia retrieved and buried Anastasia’s remains with the help of two Christians.
St. Anastasia was martyred and attained the crown of sainthood. Her feast day is commemorated on October 29.
