This hand-painted Orthodox miniature icon represents The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the cornerstone of our Christian faith.

Original artwork by Ana Drăgan (DAM), painted on wood, in egg tempera colours.

The Resurrection of our Lord, God, and Saviour Jesus Christ is the very foundation of the Orthodox Christian faith. This saving and life-giving event, which took place more than two thousand years ago, was foretold in the Holy Scriptures and proclaimed by the Lord Himself. After His Resurrection, Christ revealed Himself alive for forty days, appearing to His disciples and to many others, confirming the truth of His victory over death.

From the day of Holy Pentecost until today, the Resurrection has been the heart of the Church’s preaching and life. By rising from the dead, Christ trampled down death by death, freed humanity from the bondage of sin and corruption, and opened the way to eternal life. Without the Resurrection, there would be no salvation, no Church, and no hope of resurrection for mankind.

The empty tomb bears witness to Christ’s true divinity and true humanity, and it assures the faithful of the general resurrection at the end of the age. The bodily Resurrection of Christ is not only a past event, but a living and present reality, granting strength, grace, and new life to those who live in communion with Him. Through His Resurrection, Christ has revealed that righteousness, mercy, and life will ultimately prevail, and that all creation is called to be renewed in Him.
