Hand painted Orthodox icon on wood, “St. Theophano Martinakia”, miniature, 7x10cm
This hand-painted Orthodox miniature icon represents Saint Theophano Martinakia, a Byzantine empress by marriage to Leo VI the Wise - celebrated by the Orthodox Church on December 16.
Original artwork by Ana Drăgan (DAM), painted on wood in egg tempera colours.
Saint Theophano was born in Constantinople into a noble and faithful family, as the answer to her parents’ prayers to the Mother of God. From childhood, she was distinguished by her piety and love for the Holy Scriptures, growing in virtue and wisdom. For her beauty and purity, she was chosen to become the wife of the future Emperor Leo VI.
Although she lived in the imperial palace, Saint Theophano rejected worldly glory and comforts, choosing instead a life of humility, prayer, and charity. In secret, she practiced strict asceticism, caring for the poor, supporting widows and orphans, and living as a monastic in the midst of the world. Her entire life became a quiet offering, marked by tears, fasting, and love for others.
After the loss of her daughter, she desired to withdraw to a monastery, yet remained in the world, bearing her cross with patience and faith. Sensing her end approaching, she took leave in peace and entrusted her soul to God on November 10, 895, at a young age.
After her repose, God revealed her holiness through miracles and healings, and her memory endures as a witness to humility, charity, and steadfast love for Christ.
