Hand painted Orthodox icon on wood, “Apostle Nathanael (Bartholomew)”, miniature, 7x10cm
This hand-painted Orthodox miniature icon represents the Apostle Nathanael, also known as Nathaniel of Cana and traditionally identified with Saint Bartholomew. Saint Nathanael is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on January 4 and April 22.
Original artwork by Ana Drăgan (DAM), painted on wood in tempera colours.
Saint Nathanael, traditionally identified with the Apostle Bartholomew, was among the first disciples called by Christ. Introduced to Jesus by the Apostle Philip, he initially questioned whether the Messiah could come from Nazareth, but upon meeting the Lord, he immediately recognized Him as the Son of God and the King of Israel.
The Gospel praises Nathanael as "an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit," highlighting his sincerity, honesty, and openness to the truth. After Christ's Resurrection, he was also among the disciples who witnessed the risen Lord by the Sea of Galilee.
In Orthodox tradition, Saint Nathanael is honoured as one of the Holy Apostles, remembered for his unwavering faith and his faithful witness to the Gospel.
