This hand-painted Orthodox wooden icon is an homage towards the sons and daughters of the Romanian Orthodox Church who died for their faith, in the Romanian concentration camp (gulag) - “The Saints of Prisons”.

Original artwork in tempera colours by Ana Drăgan (DAM).

The term “Saints of Prisons” is a metaphorical expression used in Romania to refer to certain Christian prisoners - Orthodox believers - who endured persecution, torture, and imprisonment under the communist regime and remained steadfast in their faith. The expression is most often associated with political prisoners who died in communist prisons between 1948 and 1964, the harshest period of communist repression. They are also commonly referred to as martyrs or confessors of the faith.
