The holy and righteous Joachim and Anna are the parents of the Theotokos, the grandparents of Jesus Christ. Their feast day is celebrated on September 9, following the Nativity of the Theotokos; the dormition of St. Anna is commemorated on July 25.
Saint Joachim, of the tribe of Judah and a descendant of King David, and Anna, the daughter of the priest Matan of the tribe of Levi, lived a long life of faith and charity, remaining without children for fifty years. Grieved by the scorn of others and the pain of childlessness, they prayed fervently to the Lord, and God sent them an angel who announced the birth of a blessed daughter, through whom the salvation of the world would come. In their old age, Anna gave birth to the Holy Virgin Mary, whose conception and birth are celebrated by the Church. At the age of three, her parents dedicated the Mother of God to the service of the Lord, bringing her to the Temple, where she was entrusted to the priest Zechariah and grew in holiness under God’s protection.
