Hand painted Orthodox icon on wood, "Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom", 20x26 cm
This hand-painted Orthodox icon on wood represents Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom - the protectors of the newly married couples, celebrated by the Church on June 25.
Original artwork in tempera colours by Ana Drăgan (DAM).
Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom are regarded as the protectors of the Christian family and of newly married couples, serving as a model of love, faith, and unity in times of trial. Their lives speak of healing, humility, and the strength of a promise. Peter, the prince of Murom, gravely ill and without hope, was healed by the young Fevronia, a wise and devout maiden. After trials and moments of weakness, he kept his word and married her, and together they lived in obedience to God.
Although the nobles did not accept Fevronia’s humble origins, the couple chose exile over separation. Soon after, the city of Murom was struck by troubles, and the people called them back. Upon their return, Peter and Fevronia showed merciful love to all: they helped the poor, sheltered strangers, and healed the sick, gathering “treasures in Heaven.”
At the end of their lives, they prayed to depart to the Lord together and to be buried in the same tomb. God fulfilled their wish: they reposed on the same day, and their bodies were found twice united in the stone coffin they had prepared during their lifetime - a sign of their holy bond.
Their resting place in Murom became a source of healing and help for all who approach with faith. Today, Saints Peter and Fevronia remain a symbol of blessed marriage and steadfast love in Christ.
Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom are commemorated on June 25 (the day of their repose in the Lord) and on June 23 (the Synaxis of the Saints of Vladimir).
