This hand-painted Orthodox wooden icon illustrates the Holy Prophet Elijah, often regarded as the forefather of Christian monasticism - commemorated by the Church on July 20.

Saint Elijah the Prophet lived in the Northern Kingdom of Israel more than eight centuries before the birth of Christ. Chosen by God to call His people back to true worship, he fearlessly opposed idolatry and remained steadfast in faith during a time of great spiritual decline.

The Old Testament recounts many miracles associated with his life: he was fed by ravens in the wilderness, sustained by God through times of famine, raised the widow of Zarephath’s son, called down fire from heaven, and prayed for the return of rain after years of drought. He later encountered God in the stillness of a gentle breeze and was taken up into heaven in a fiery chariot.

In Christian tradition, Saint Elijah is also remembered as a precursor of monastic life and as one of the prophets who appeared beside Christ at His Transfiguration on Mount Tabor.
