This hand-painted Orthodox wooden icon represents Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia, known as the patron saint of children - commemorated by the Orthodox Church on November 26.
Original artwork in tempera colours by Ana Drăgan (DAM).
Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia was born in the 6th century into a wealthy family but chose a life of prayer, asceticism, and service to others. Although he lived as a hermit, he regularly returned among the people to comfort the suffering and help those in need.
According to Church tradition, God granted him the gift of healing, and he devoted his life especially to the care of children. Through his prayers, many received comfort and healing, and he came to be venerated as the patron saint of children, expectant mothers, and couples praying for the gift of children.
In Orthodox iconography, Saint Stylianos is most often depicted holding an infant in his arms, a symbol of his compassion, care, and loving protection. To this day, he remains one of the most beloved saints, invoked in prayer for the health, well-being, and spiritual growth of children.
