This hand-painted Orthodox wooden icon represents Saint John of Damascus, also known as John Damascene, Chrysorrhoas, "streaming with gold," (i.e., the golden speaker) - commemorated by the Orthodox Church on December 4.
Original artwork in tempera colours by Ana Drăgan (DAM).
Saint John of Damascus was born in the 7th century into a prominent Christian family in Damascus. Well educated in theology, philosophy, and the sciences, he succeeded his father as a high official under the Umayyad Caliphate before dedicating his life entirely to God as a monk at the Monastery of Saint Sabbas near Jerusalem.
He became one of the greatest defenders of the veneration of holy icons during the Iconoclastic Controversy. According to Church tradition, after his right hand was cut off because of false accusations, he prayed before an icon of the Mother of God and was miraculously healed. In gratitude, he placed a silver replica of his hand on the icon, giving rise to the famous icon of the Mother of God “Three-Handed” (Tricherousa).
Saint John spent the rest of his life writing theological works, hymns, and commentaries that profoundly shaped Orthodox Christianity. Revered as one of the great Fathers of the Church, his legacy continues to inspire the faithful through his defense of the Orthodox faith and the sacred tradition of iconography.
