Hand painted Orthodox diptych icon on wood, "St. Lawrence of Rome and St. John the Russian", 2 x 10x20 cm
Two pieces of wood, two saints: one icon. Saint Lawrence of Rome (August 10) and Saint John the Russian (May 27), united in one thought, which is the love of God.
Original artwork by Ana Drăgan (DAM), painted on wood in egg tempera colours.
The holy, glorious and right-victorious Archdeacon and Martyr Saint Lawrence (Latin: Laurentius, laurelled) was one of the seven deacons of the Church of Rome and a companion of Pope Martyr Sixtus II, all of whom were martyred under Christian persecution by the Emperor Valerian in the year 258. He is especially remembered for his charitable work for the poor. The Church commemorates him on August 10.
Saint John the Russian (Russian: Иоанн Русский) (1690 – May 27 (N.S. June 9), 1730) is one of the most renowned saints in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Being a prisoner of war and a slave to a Turkish Agha, he became famous and respected even by his Muslim master for his humility, steadiness in faith and benevolence. His holy relics are claimed to be undecayed and wonder-working; there are traditions that this saint particularly helps sick children and those who suffer from cancer.
