This interpretation of the Mother of God with the Infant has its source in the colonial iconography of Peru. The syncretism between Christian religious themes and folk art in the Andes area gave rise to representations of the Mother and Baby Jesus specific to the area. In this interpretation, the Mother of God is seen carrying Baby Jesus on her back, wrapped in the traditional bond that Peruvians use to keep their children close, while taking care of their daily chores.
The icon is less common in Orthodox iconography, but there are also interpretations specific to the Byzantine tradition, under the name of "Andes Virgin & Child".
One of the most widespread interpretations is that of the Peruvian artist Artemio Coanqui.
