On November 8, the Church commemorates the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, together with the entire assembly of the heavenly hosts. This day is therefore dedicated to all the bodiless powers.

Saint Michael the Archangel is among the most highly honored of the Angels and the hosts of the bodiless powers. He is called the Archistrategos, or Great Commander, as the leader of the heavenly armies. According to Holy Scripture and Tradition, he has often interceded on behalf of humankind and continues to be the Protector of the Faith. He is especially invoked to guard the nation against foreign invasions and civil strife, and to grant victory over enemies in battle.

Saint Gabriel the Archangel is likewise recognized as a commander of the heavenly hosts. His name is linked with many events in Holy Scripture, most notably the Annunciation to the Mother of God of the conception of our Lord Jesus Christ. For this reason, his most significant role is regarded as that of the herald of humanity’s salvation.
